When making a film on real life, you have to decide which way you want to go.We kept the facts as straight as we could, and fictionalised the characters for the sake of cinema. We were lucky to get a fair amount of pre-publicity due to the subject. Also, the song 'Ganpat... ' which we thought was a fun song, became a huge hit much to our surprise. As for criticism, that's a part and parcel of film-making . In case of a real-life event especially, people are more aware of the happenings, and thereby more critical. Incidentally, my next is also a film based on events against the background of world terrorism.
Galaxy of stars:
I think the big star cast has worked in favour of the movie. It helped in getting a big budget as well. The subject of the movie is not completely universal, but more Mumbai based. Thus, to get the biggest stars in the smallest roles was the movie's main attraction outside Mumbai.
Comeback for Vivek:
Vivek Oberoi is a very talented actor, only, he has to figure out what types of roles to portray and what sort of an image to create. He's succeeded after a series of let-downs only because he has the hunger and enthusiasm to do it.
Bonhomie with the Bachchans:
Simply stating, you just get very comfortable with certain people over time. When you spend day in and day out with your friends, your comfort level with them increases, making it easier to work with them.
Hollywood beginnings:
I have worked as an assistant director in a few Hollywood productions, but I strongly believe that doing the same thing here might not work. You have to see what suits you. For instance, I took almost a year in pre-production for my latest film, and took pains to make all the actors look different. All of them do two-three films a year, and if they look the same in all their movies, then why would somebody come and watch my film?
No love for love stories:
I don't make love stories. I try and stay away from them, for I don't feel comfortable with the genre.
Ahmedabad is home:
My family lives in the pol area in Ahmedabad. The city is my favourite place to chill. I often come home in the weekends and hang out at my club there.
